WHY BEES?

GR/ Πολλοί Άγιοι όπως ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος, ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος κι άλλοι, έχουν αναφερθεί στην τέλεια κοινωνία της μέλισσας, ως ένα παράδειγμα μοναδικό για τον άνθρωπο. Παρομοιάζουν δε την κοινωνία των μελισσών ως ένα πρότυπο για το ποίμνιο και στο πώς πρέπει μία κοινωνία να λειτουργεί.

Πολλά χρόνια πριν, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος είχε περιγράψει την κοινωνία των μελισσών, ως την ιδανική κοινωνία και τη χρησιμοποιούσε ως παράδειγμα σε πολλούς λόγους του. Νουθετούσε τους νέους στη διάκριση, για το τι θα επιλέγουν στη ζωή τους, στη μελέτη τους.

Έλεγε: «Οἱ μέλισσες δὲν πετᾶνε σὲ ὅλα τὰ λουλούδια μὲ τὸν ἴδιο τρόπο. Κι ὅπου καθίσουν, δὲν κοιτᾶνε νὰ τὰ πάρουν ὅλα. Παίρνουν μονάχα ὅσο χρειάζεται στὴ δουλειά τους καὶ τὸ ὑπόλοιπο τὸ παρατοῦν καὶ φεύγουν. Ἔτσι κι ἐμεῖς, ἂν εἴμαστε φρόνιμοι. Θὰ πάρουμε ἀπ᾿ αὐτὰ τὰ κείμενα ὅ,τι συγγενεύει μὲ τὴν ἀλήθεια καὶ μᾶς χρειάζεται καὶ τὰ ὑπόλοιπα θὰ τὰ ἀφήσουμε πίσω μας. Κι ὅπως, κόβοντας τὸ τριαντάφυλλο, ἀποφεύγουμε τ᾿ ἀγκάθια τῆς τριανταφυλλιᾶς, ἔτσι κι ἀπὸ τὰ κείμενα αὐτὰ θὰ πάρουμε ὅ,τι εἶναι χρήσιμο καὶ θὰ φυλάξουμε τὸν ἑαυτό μας ἀπ᾿ ὅ,τι εἶναι ἐπιζήμιο.»

Honey, Bees & Flowers, please!

ENG/ In the Holy temple of Artamitis Monastery there is the rare icon - Virgin Mary of Melissou holding a honeycomb surrounded by bees.

Many Saints such as Saint Gregory, Saint John Chrysostom and others, have referred to the perfect society of the bee, as an unique example for humans. They have described the society of bees as a model for the flock and how a society should function.

Many years before, Basil the Great had described the society of bees as the ideal society and used it as an example in many of his speeches. He instructed young people in discernment, in what they will choose in their lives, in their studies.

He said: "Bees do not fly to all flowers in the same way. And wherever they sit, they don't look to take everything. They only take what is needed for their work and the rest they give up and leave. So can we, if we are wise. We will take from these texts what is related to the truth and what we need and we will leave the rest behind us. And just as, by cutting the rose, we avoid the thorns of the rose, so from these texts we will take what is useful and we will protect ourselves from what is harmful."
